‘Tis the season to treat!

December 19, 2017 by Charlotte Markham

Christmas is just around the corner and with it comes the overwhelming temptation to treat! Unfortunately, many traditional festive favourites are loaded with sugar, fat (not necessarily the good kind) and, therefore, empty calories! But at Frog Hollow we have the answer to guilt-free indulgence, our healthy treats, and super snacks are both delicious and nutritious, they’ll give you the energy you need to take on the room at Charades on Christmas Day afternoon, or fuel your brisk Boxing Day walk!

Here are three ways to help ensure a healthy, happy Christmas for all!

Gift guilt-free chocolate – Frog Hollow Truffles contain Raw Cacao not to be confused with ‘cocoa’. Raw cacao is made from unroasted cold-pressed Theobroma Cacao beans. Not using heat in the process ensures that all the original nutrients remain intact. Raw cacao is high in antioxidants and a good source of Vitamin C, manganese, magnesium, iron and potassium. Our beautifully boxed truffles make the perfect gift for health conscious foodies and are available in two sizes. The Mezzo Selection contains twelve assorted truffles, (one of each flavour), and the Super Selection contains twenty-four assorted truffles, (two of each flavour). View all flavours HERE.

Pick and Mix Energy Bites

Excite tiny tummies with Energy Bites – It’s no secret that if you have little people in your house, excitement will have reached fever pitch by December 24th. Unfortunately, tempting treats packed with refined sugar are often likely to exacerbate the situation. For treats that curb hunger without hyperactivity, choose Frog Hollow Energy Bites. We can’t solemnly promise perfectly behaved pip-squeaks (it is Christmas, after all), but we can guarantee treats packed with protein and healthy ingredients. These flavoursome, fuelling, bites are also a perfect treat to set out for Santa!

Raw Orange Cacao Swirl Cake

Ditch the mince pies and select a superfood cake… As you settle down to the Queen’s Speech with a decidedly British cup of tea, you and your loved ones might like a slice of something nice! We can make you a superfood cake that will serve from eight to sixteen people, bursting with goodness and fresh flavours. These are all available to collect from our kitchen in Westbourne.

Feeling Peckish? – How to choose snacks (and foods) that nourish.

October 9, 2017 by Charlotte Markham

When you’re having an overwhelmingly busy day, week, month, it’s inevitable that you’re going to reach for quick and easy snacks. But being hungry and in a hurry doesn’t have to mean being unhealthy… To help you make the right choices I want to share some of my top tips for making great snack choices.

Sweets for my sweet (tooth) – Ever wondered why you feel hangry if you haven’t eaten for a while? Low blood sugar triggers the release of stress-related hormones like cortisol and adrenaline leaving more than your tummy grumbling! A little bit of what you fancy can change your mood in an instant, but beware… That sticky, sweet sugar-licious fix can play havoc with those hormone levels too.
What to avoid:
– Artificial sweeteners: These include aspartame; my general rule of thumb is to ask yourself whether your granny would have used it in her cooking?

– Different types of sugars listed to confuse: Things like high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, glycerol, sorbitol, sucanet and grape syrup may sound harmless, but these highly processed sugars are highly addictive.

– Fruit juice concentrate – Fruit sugar is natural, necessary and normal in the fruit it comes from as you would consume it in small quantities and usually with the fibre, vitamins and minerals, but removed concentrated and refined and then added back into products without the wholefruit it came from, then makes it unnatural and therefore unhealthy and no different from refined sugar.
Better alternatives: Raw honey, Maple syrup, Coconut blossom nectar, Stevia, Dates, brown rice syrup, lucuma, cinnamon and liquorice.

Feelgood fats – Fats are an essential part of your diet, but not all fats are created equal.
What to avoid:
– Trans fats and saturated fats.

Better alternatives:

– Extra virgin olive oil. Use this for drizzling, not for cooking as most nutrients are lost in the cooking process.

– Coconut oil in pure form, not deodorised (this has been through some awful processes including bleaching to strip out the coconut flavours!) Coconut oil can be used in cooking as it retains all its nutrients.

– Raw Avocado, nuts, homemade nut butters and seeds.

Delicious Dairy – Milk and dairy products are a great source of protein and calcium, but if you’re lactose intolerant, some great dairy replacements are coconut yoghurt, coconut milk, nut milk, oat milk or rice milk.

Snack well – Colourful food equals a colourful life! Eat a rainbow and mix up what you eat for snacks. Choose wholefoods and organic, where possible. Locally sourced foods are always a winner. Eat plenty of raw fresh foods, including fresh fruit, juices, eggs, berries, nuts, seeds, raw vegetables, fresh homemade soup.

Choose Frog Hollow Goodness – Frog Hollow super snacks were born out of my frustration when confronted with the sad range of fat-free and diet foods, offered as treats whilst trying to banish the burden of a few extra pounds! I felt that these solemn offerings didn’t fill me with energy and in fact, were causing me harm. I made a conscious decision to step away from artificial sweeteners and consume only nutritious whole foods. With nothing on the market that was completely natural and still able to curb my sugar cravings, I set about creating my own snacks. All Frog Hollow energy bites, superfood cakes and raw cacao truffles are free from dairy, gluten and refined sugar. These nutrient rich delights will help you snack well and ensure your tummy smiles!

Sussex Bounty

September 5, 2017 by Charlotte Markham

At Frog Hollow we’re grateful to be based in beautiful West Sussex, and we make the most of all the local bounty on our doorstep whenever we can.

You’ll find that we adapt the ingredients we use in our superfood cakes and energy bites to make the most of the delicious fresh produce on hand from season to season. It helps to tantalise your taste buds and by reducing our food miles whenever we can, we’re also doing our bit to preserve the planet!

Whilst strawberry season may be coming to an end, there is still some deliciously soft, ripe fruit out there, and it’s often these berries that are the best to make jam with. If you’ve been out walking the downs lately, you’ll have noticed the hedgerows are bursting with delicious blackberries; and while the rain may have dampened the spirits during the last few days of the school holidays, it will have done wonders to plump up the freebie fruit that’s available with just a little foraging!

So, once you’ve got the kids on the school bus this week why not take some time for yourself again? Start with a stroll through the countryside. Pack your Tupperware with energy bites to fuel your steps, then fill that container with very berry goodness on the way home. To spur you on in your quest for Sussex bounty here’s my recipe for all natural, bursting with berries chia jam…

Fruit Chia Jam

  • 125g fresh or frozen berries, (defrosted). Use blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, strawberries, or any other berries you have.
  • 3 medjool dates – pitted
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  1. Add all the ingredients to a food processor and whizz until completely broken down. Leave for 10 minutes for the chia seeds to become gelatinous and then whizz briefly a second time to finish.
  2. Keep refrigerated and serve with scones, on toast or sandwiched between the layers of a cake!

Don’t forget to check the archives for my healthy scone recipe, perfect as a base for your berry jam, they are free from wheat, gluten, dairy and refined sugar.

Don’t worry, bee happy!

July 6, 2017 by Charlotte Markham

10th July marks national “Don’t step on a bee day”!

Here at Frog Hollow we think that every day should be a day that these stripy little fellas, so vital to our planet, are protected from feet!

Without honeybees, the planet would look very different indeed; favourite summer foods like strawberries and avocados would disappear, and so would your morning coffee, because bees work tirelessly to pollinate about one third of everything we eat. These industrious creatures are invaluable to maintaining ecosystems around the world.

Olivia and I were thrilled to have a swarm of bees visit us at home in May, which were safely relocated to Tuppenny Barn in Emsworth.

If you’d like to protect these beautiful busy, buzzy creatures for more than one day a year, here are six ways you can help.

  • Let your garden grow – Plant bee friendly plants. The Royal Horticultural Society website can help you choose honeybee favourites. Let the grass grow under your feet a little, it will give the bees places to feed and shelter… Who really needs an excuse not to do the mowing?!
  • Put away the pesticides – Chemicals and pest treatments might make your roses look fancy, but they’re not doing the bees any good at all.
  • Go local – We’re talking honey, honey! By doing so you’ll be supporting your local beekeepers who care about the stripy fellas. We can thoroughly recommend the honey sold at Tuppenny Barn. It may even have been helped along by our visiting swarm.
  • Count bees not sheep – Take part in the Friends of the Earth Great British Bee Count. You’ll be helping provide data that bee experts can use to learn more about how bee decline can be reversed.
  • Adopt a beehive, or give one as a gift – The British Bee Keeper’s Association has an initiative that allows you to become an armchair beekeeper. Find out more HERE.
  • Let your littlies bee educated – The fabulous Tuppenny Barn has a Bee Creative education day as part of their summer holiday programme. Find out more HERE.

If you’d like to celebrate honeybees by tasting the fruits of their labour and at the same time pop some spring in your step, then look no further than our O’Sesame Energy Bites containing raw honey; or the Carrot Buzz flavour containing bee pollen.

And if you fancy a slice of something nice with your cuppa after buzzing around, then the Frog Hollow Blueberry and Lemon Mousse Superfood Cake will do just the trick, it’s chock full of delicious, nutritious ingredients, including the natural sweetness of honey!
