Should schools be nut free zones?

February 1, 2018 by Charlotte Markham

It’s no secret that food-allergies have over recent years become more prevailant; and according to the NHS website there are a couple of reasons for this:

  • One theory behind the increase is that a typical child’s diet has changed considerably over the last three to four decades.
  • Another is that children are increasingly growing up in “germ-free” environments. This sometimes results in their immune systems not receiving sufficient early exposure to the germs needed to develop properly. This is known as the hygiene hypothesis.

Sadly this rise in food allergies, specifically nut allergies, has led to many schools becoming nut-free zones. Whilst, as a parent, I can sympathise with others who may have children with severe allergies, I also can’t help but feel that a blanket ban on nuts is a severe cop out by schools. Indeed, I believe that we could be making the whole situation worse by cutting out an entirely healthy and nutritious food group from a school culinary curriculum.

Allergy UK has a whole list of resources for schools, and I quote from the European Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Position Paper included within the resources (view it here), which states;

The goals in school are to create a network of support and a self-sustaining environment of awareness that reduces the likelihood of reactions and enables staff to recognize and treat emergencies. The ideal approach is for schools to develop a formal policy, with the aim of achieving these goals, which is informed by the available expertise.
It doesn’t mention banning the nut forever!
Don’t dis the humble nut!
I think that nuts get a bad rap at school, they don’t deserve to be expelled. They are made out to be the bad guys, but in fact they are packed full of protein, fibre and essential heart-healthy fats, with a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals. A 30 gram serving of non-salted mixed nuts is a power-packed snack that will give you heaps of energy. That’s why you’ll find nuts or nut butters as an ingredient in almost every flavour of Frog Hollow Energy Bites.
What makes me even angrier is some of the food choices that are included in our children’s school diets on an everyday basis. Why remove a perfectly natural, healthy food group in its entirety, and yet allow over processed, sugar-laden foods instead? Is this really going to help our children in the long run? Or could schools be doing more to allow the humble nut to join in the fun, by educating their staff and pupils around food allergies?
Top Nut BananaHow to fight back…
If your child doesn’t suffer from a nut allergy, but attends a school that is a nut free zone, be sure you include nuts in their afternoon snack, they’re the perfect option to keep them going until dinner time. I always take a few energy bites with me when I collect Olivia from school. She’s always hungry when she comes out and two or three bites are all she needs to fill the gap between school pick-up and supper!

How about a Hero Ingredient? We should Cacao!

April 4, 2017 by Charlotte Markham

At Frog Hollow we believe in bringing you tasty treats that are nutritious and packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. So over the next six to twelve months we’ll be introducing you to some of our hero ingredients, first up wearing the superman pants and wonder woman cape, (because we also believe in gender equality), it’s Raw Cacao powder!

This hero ingredient originates from central America and the Amazon basin, it comes from raw cacao pods that are sun-dried then cold pressed to separate the cacao from the cacao butter, after grinding you are left a fine powder. Sadly, raw cacao powder is often misunderstood and confused with its villainous adversary, the chemically processed and roasted, cocoa powder.

As a superfood raw cacao has long been fueling superheroes, used for its health benefits as far back as the Aztecs and Mayans, it was considered so valuable it was once used as a currency.

Here are 5 ways that Raw Cacao Powder will help you become a super-hero too!

  • You’ll be able to fight off free radicals! Raw cacao arms you with Antioxidants. You thought blueberries were good for you? They’ve got nothing on cacao, which has forty times the number of Antioxidants as blueberries! These amazing Antioxidants fight the furious free radicals that can cause a wide range of illnesses and chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease.
  • It gives you enough energy to chase the bad guys, or simply run after your kids. That’s because of the magnesium which helps you produce ATP, a coenzyme that is used to transport energy within your cells. As an aside, magnesium also helps to protect against osteoporosis, so you’ll be running along rooftops for years to come.
  • You’ll outwit the Joker! Packed with brain-boosting flavanols, raw cacao will keep you sharp as a tack!
  • Like all good superheroes, you’ll be able to keep calm and carry on in the face of adversity, that’s because raw cacao can help to lower blood pressure naturally.
  • You’ll look great in your catsuit! Raw cacao can help improve your metabolism and combat that nasty stress hormone cortisol, that causes you to cling on to body fat.

If you know a superhero, dedicated to making the world a better place, who deserves a treat, consider our raw cacao truffles, made with cashew nuts, Medjool dates, chia, coconut nectar, hazelnuts, vanilla extract, Himalayan pink rock salt and power packing raw cacao nibs and raw cacao.
